The BRDM-1 (Boyevaya Razvedyvatelnaya Dozornaya Mashina, Russian: Боевая Разведывательная Дозорная Машина, literally "Combat Reconnaissance Patrol Vehicle") is a Soviet amphibious armored patrol car introduced in the early 1960s. It was created as a replacement for the earlier BA-64B armored car, which was incapable of amphibious operations. The BRDM was designed for reconnaissance, convoy escort, and patrolling.
The BRDM-1 is powered by a GAZ-40P gasoline engine, which allows for a maximum speed of 90 km/h on land and 10 km/h on water. It features a four-wheel drive system that allows for exceptional off-road performance. The armament of the BRDM-1 includes a 7.62mm machine gun mounted on a cupola, which can be operated by a crewmember in the turret.
The BRDM-1 is equipped with a watertight hull and a pair of water jets, which allow it to traverse water obstacles such as rivers and lakes. The vehicle can carry up to five passengers in addition to the driver and commander.
Despite its success as an amphibious reconnaissance vehicle, the BRDM-1 had several drawbacks, including poor fuel efficiency, a cramped interior, and limited armor protection. It was eventually replaced by the BRDM-2, which continued to see use throughout the Cold War and in numerous conflicts.
